Dr. Daniel and Juliette Abdulian Honored at Merdinian 37th Annual Banquet

By Joyce Abdulian

The joyous atmosphere at the Phoenicia Banquet Hall on Sunday evening, April 28, 2019  felt  like a family reunion within a Celebratory Banquet. The evening was planned by the Merdinian School Women’s Auxiliary, and Co-Chaired by Ani Hanessian and Louisa Janbazian.

Louisa Janbazian welcomed the full house by quoting former AMAA Vice President, Peter Kougasian, Esq at the 30th Annual  Merdinian banquet, “Why Merdinian?  What is the purpose of a Christian, Armenian education in this increasingly secular world….? Without the kind of education children receive at Merdinian School, how will our children come to see, that Christian faith is not just tradition, or superstition, or ethics, …but rather that Christian faith is so important, that for its sake, their Armenian forebears went to their death. We are here today, because we want a School where young minds are at least exposed to the idea that right and wrong really are sacred commandments…

Master of Ceremonies, The Honorable Alice Altoon, created a warm and informative atmosphere as she moved the program along; also sharing the family connections she has with her first cousin, honoree Dr. Daniel Abdulian.

After the singing of the American and Armenian National Anthems by soloists Arpy Aintablian and Raffi Kerbabian, the opening prayer was given by Rev. Hendrik Shanazarian, Associate Pastor of the United Armenian Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Dr. Nazareth Darakjian, AMAA Board President, congratulated the honorees for their many years of dedication to the Merdinian School and AMAA—both having served for years on the AMAA Board.

A full table of Abdulian/Atikian cousins, which included the honoree’s children, Dr. John, Richard, and daughter Diana, were all present to honor their Uncle Daniel and Juliette. Everyone enjoyed greeting the many relatives and friends present, making an evening full of warm exchanges. Juliette’s daughter, Tamara Jabour, of Nashville, Tennessee, was pleased to be at the event. Mr. Aram Boulgourjian, first Principal of Merdinian, as well as many teachers and parents were in attendance.

The booklet message from Dr. John and Linda Kay Abdulian and family is worthy of quoting. “In love and honor of Dr. Daniel and Juliette Abdulian for their long devotion and stewardship to Christian education and the Merdinian School.  They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”

Dedicated Principal, Lina Arslanian congratulated the honorees for their years of devotion to the School. She also shared a poignant account of her appreciation of Dr. Daniel as her personal physician.

Five year old Zoey Atachian, Merdinian Preschool student, brought down the house as she sang the Armenian song Menk Chenk Tzeker Sourp Kirkeh (We don’t leave the Bible) accompanied by her grandmother, Esther Assilian. Enjoying the limelight, she continued impromptu reciting a Bible verse she had learned in school. Vahe Snapyan, a dignified 8th grade student gave an eloquent, emotional recitation of Zarmanali Hye (Amazing Armenian) by Poet Gevorg Emin. Soloists, Soprano Arpy Aintablian and Tenor Raffi Kerbabian, presented a meaningful musical program of Armenian songs, the last of which was Dr. Daniel’s favorite, “How Great Though Art.”

Mrs. Elizabeth Agbabian introduced the honorees, depicting how experiences in their youth formed their life’s actions of dedication and service.  She gave an interesting history of the honorees’ family lives in Kessab and Aleppo. She shared her personal and family friendship with both, presenting their life-long love and commitment to the C&E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School and the AMAA. She also shared how the brothers, Drs. Daniel, Jack, and Misak were a trio of healing hands in the community.

Merdinian Board of Directors Chairman, Dr. Vahe Nalbandian, presented the honorees with a gift and Lifetime Achievement Award—thanking them for their years of generousity, dedication, and service to the School. The honorees graciously accepted the honor bestowed upon them—Dr. Daniel in his usual dignified manner. Juliette expressed her appreciation by personally thanking everyone involved with the planning and execution of the evening. It was evident how much the evening meant to both of them. Well Done Good and Faithful Servants.

Women’s Auxiliary Co-Chairs Ani Hanessian and Louisa Janbazian presented a $20,000 check to Dr. Nalbandian as the Auxiliary’s contribution to the School for scholarships and operations.

Dr. Nalbandian introduced Mrs. Azniv Ghazanian, a long-time parent of three Merdinian students—who will miss the school, now that her children have moved on. She lovingly spoke of her years with the PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) and the life-long friendships forged. She shared how the Merdinian outstanding education within a Christian environment was of foremost importance to her and her family. Perhaps grandchildren will bring her back.

The “Kessab” element was very apparent. Rev. Serop Megerditchian, Senior Pastor of Armenian Cilicia Evangelical Church of Pasadena, shared how he is a cousin with the late Anush Abdulian. His closing comments and prayer came with a comment directed to Dr. Daniel in their own beloved Kessab dialect.

The devotion to Merdinian, not only by our honorees Dr. Daniel and Juliette Abdulian, but by the entire community, keeps the legacy of the School’s founders Charlotte and Elise Merdinian vital. These two sisters planted the seed for countless children to reap the benefits of their benevolence—and pass it forward.

Established in 1982, Merdinian is the only Armenian Evangelical School in the United States. The School offers a broad-based curriculum that fosters academic excellence, high moral values, and spiritual enrichment in the Armenian Evangelical tradition. The School strives to create a safe and nurturing environment where every student receives personal attention to become a successful and responsible individual.

On a clear, crisp morning on Saturday, March 9, the family of Dr. Misak Abdulian, along with his wife Hourig and family members, gathered at the C&E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School, to unveil a plaque that was placed in front of the Administrative office of the School in his memory. Other Abdulian family members and friends were there to join in the honor, as was School Principal Lina Arslanian.

Dr. Misak, along with his brothers, Dr. Jack, Dr. Daniel and Dr. Hrair, were founding members of the Merdinian School. Dr. Misak actually discovered the property on which the School was built, and spent his life in support of it—both financially and physically, serving on the Board for many years.

Rev. Hendrik Shanazarian, Pastor at the United Armenian Congregational Church of Los Angeles, led the group in prayer. School Board Chairman, Dr. Vahe Nalbandian shared pleasant memories of the honoree. Mr. Harold DeMirjian, Board member and life-long supporter of the School, also spoke. Mrs. Juliette Abdulian, School Board and Women’s Auxiliary member, shared her thoughts.

Son, Dr. Michael Abdulian, spoke of how his father’s upbringing in Kessab, Syria, in an Armenian Evangelical family, formed his lifelong love of education and service. Dr. Abdulian’s two granddaughters, Alene and Alexia, spoke lovingly of their “Bebo” and were proud to carry his name. A reception followed at the Faculty Lounge, where family members and friends continued to share their memories of Dr. Misak and his love towards the School.

Minister Harutyunyan addressed the students and answered questions directed to him by some of the students regarding the education and the school system in Armenia, and concluded his remarks emphasizing the importance of the Armenian schools in the Diaspora. The students presented a few patriotic songs dedicated to Yerevan, which was greatly appreciated by the Minister. The program ended with a prayer by Rev. Megerditchian. The Merdinian School Women’s Auxiliary Celebrates 20th Anniversary and Honors Suzie Phillips, a Founding Member

By Louisa Janbazian

On Saturday, November 3, 2018, the Verdugo Hall of Castaway Restaurant in Burbank, CA was filled with joy and great enthusiasm as friends and supporters of the C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School gathered together for a Fall Luncheon to celebrate the School’s Women’s Auxiliary and its 20th Anniversary and to pay tribute to one of the founding members, Suzie Phillips.

After an Invocation offered by Rev. Hendrik Shanazarian, Interim Pastor of the United Armenian Congregational Church of Los Angeles, the School’s dedicated and dynamic Principal Lina Arslanian, accompanied by three students, gave an update on the School’s successes and achievements. Principal Arslanian commended the support and love of the members of the Women’s Auxiliary to Merdinian School and expressed her “gratitude for an amazing celebration luncheon on this special anniversary and heartfelt congratulations to the honoree, Suzie Phillips, a founding member!” The three students then expressed their utmost pride to be at Merdinian, where they pursue excellence not only in academics, but in learning about their Armenian Christian heritage.

Following lunch, the Hamazkayin Niari Dance group, under the direction of Catherine Hairabedian, entertained the guests with several authentic Armenian dances, which were received with much enthusiasm.

Dina Tilkian Phillips, the Auxiliary’s first Chairperson, reflected on the formation and early days of the Auxiliary, when a group of dedicated women from the greater Los Angeles area came together as a support group to help the School both financially and morally. She then introduced honoree Suzie Phillips, who graciously hosted the first meeting of the newly formed Auxiliary group 20 years ago. Describing Mrs. Phillips, she said: “Most importantly, Suzie loves the Lord and has a heart of service and a spirit of generosity to help others, and this has been a shining example to all her family.”

Ani Hanessian and Louisa Janbazian, current Co-Chairs of the Merdinian Auxiliary, invited Mrs. Phillips to the podium. As a token of appreciation, they presented her with a framed page from the 1998 Merdinian School Yearbook showing two group photos from the Auxiliary’s first year and the following words, describing the formation of the Women’s Auxiliary: In May 1997, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School was formed. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to support Armenian Evangelical Education, promote interest in the Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School, further the mission of the School and render financial support, in all cooperating with the Principal and the Board of Directors. The Auxiliary is an affiliate of the Armenian Missionary Association of America. The first meeting of the newly formed Women’s Auxiliary was held at the home of Suzie Phillips in the presence of the late Rev. Dr. Movses B. Janbazian, Executive Director of the AMAA.

Mr. and Mrs. George R. Phillips

Mrs. Phillips expressed her gratitude for this honor and said: “I feel, as members of the Auxiliary, we are helping the students to grow in some small way. From the Principal to the teachers to the visiting ministers, we are all planting that seed in each student’s heart, so the children will grow and become leaders of their community. And the most important thing we are planting in each little heart, is the Word of God for it will stay with them forever.”

With their love, dedication and effort, Mrs. Phillips and her husband George R. Phillips have been a blessing to the School since its formative days. They have indeed heeded God’s word; “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School Holds Year-End Programs and Commencement Exercises

By Louisa Janbazian

Sherman Oaks, CA — The C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School once again successfully completed its 36th academic year in June with Year-End Programs and Graduation Ceremonies.

We will forevermore hold and cherish all that we have accomplished as a unified class and let us commit to defending the image of Merdinian since, we, as the graduates and future alumni, must influence others and give back to this great center of excellence. Ani Karajayan

The Commencement Exercises of the Elementary and Middle Sections were held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 in the Aram and Anahis D. Boolghoorjian Hall of the School. After the National Anthems and Invocation offered by Rev. Serop Megerditchian, Ministry Coordinator of the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America, the graduates of the Elementary section presented a program of recitations and songs, followed by the presentation of their diplomas. The salutatorians of the Elementary section graduates were Evelina Aharonian and Austin Yeghishian, and the Valedictorian was Abigail Chatalyan.

On behalf of the school Board, Chairman Dr. Vahe Nalbandian praised God for another successful year and expressed his gratitude to the staff, parents and Board members, who had worked tirelessly throughout the year in pursuit of excellence at Merdinian School. Addressing the students he said, “Your teachers have worked very hard to provide you with the best education they can. What your parents and teachers expect of you, in return, is that you try your best in whatever you do and, most importantly, behave responsibly. In addition to hard work, perseverance is another key ingredient for your success.”

We all have potential to make an impact in this world by committing to our values. We will accomplish our goals as proof of all of Merdinian contributions, especially the proof of God’s love and fruit of His labor. Nicole Tilkan

In his keynote message, Rev. Megerditchian addressing the parents said, “Your children are your treasurers. Invest in them by providing an Armenian-Christian education.” And addressing the students he said, “You are the pride of the Merdinian School, your parents, your Church and the entire Armenian Nation. Safeguard and treasure your forefathers’ Christian faith, their national identity and their golden Armenian language.” Concluding his message and quoting from the Անլռելի Զանգակատուն (Unsilenced Steeple) of the great Armenian Poet Baruyr Sevag, he said, “Be that Unsilenced Steeple, which always rings Armenian School, Christ Centered faith of the Armenian nation, patriotism and humanitarianism.”

Following Rev. Megerditchian’s message, the 8th graders presented a program of recitations and patriotic songs. Salutatorians of the Middle School graduates were Nicole Tilkan and Ani Kosoyan and the valedictorians were Marianna Dzhuryan and Ani Karajayan.

Following the presentation of diplomas and awards, Principal Lina Arslanian congratulated all the graduates and said, “At the core of a successful educational or career experience are the virtues of integrity, responsibility, diligence, determination, and perseverance. Make the right choices for yourselves so you stay focused on your goals and face challenges as they come your way. Most of all, Look up to God. Praise Him and thank Him for all of His wonderful blessings. Keep God in mind in every event of your life so He can guide you, teach you, fill you with His power, protect you, and lead you forward. “

The Graduation Ceremony concluded with a Benediction offered Rev. Megerditchian.
On Saturday, June 2, the kindergarten class held its own Graduation Ceremony. A class of twenty-four students graduated from kindergarten. Harut Khachatryan, Pastor of Christian Education at United Armenian Congregational Church of Los Angeles offered the Invocation and the Benediction as well as shared a short message with the graduates and their parents based on the Book of Proverbs Chapter 2. “My Children, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, and if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” (Verses 1-5). Before receiving their diplomas, the graduating students presented a beautiful program of songs, recitations, and dances.

«Մերտինեանը մեր երկրորդ տունը դարձաւ, իսկ Մերտինեանի ուսուցիչները՝ մեր երկրորդ ծնողները։ Մերտինեանի մէջ մենք ստացանք բարձր ուսում եւ կրթութիւն։ Դարձանք հայրենասէր ու ազգասէր եւ Քրիստոնեայ հայեր»։ Ani Kosoyan

Merdinian School’s 36th Anniversary Banquet Honors Dr. John and Mrs. Mary Kassabian

By Louisa Janbazian

On Sunday, May 6, 2018, friends and supporters of the C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School gathered at Vertigo Hall in Glendale, CA to celebrate the School’s 36th Anniversary Banquet.

After the welcoming remarks of the Banquet Co-Chair Rita Meneshian, MC Diana Mangioglu Nazarian invited Rev. Dr. Vartkes Kassouni, former Minister of the United Armenian Congregational Church and one of the pioneers of Merdinian School, for the invocation. Following the national anthems of the United States and Armenia, sung by a group of Merdinian students, Dr. Nazareth Darakjian, President of the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA), delivered greetings from the AMAA and once again reassured the Association’s continued support for the School.

Before inviting Principal Lina Arslanian to deliver her remarks, Mrs. Nazarian acknowledged the outstanding Armenian, Christian-based education provided by Merdinian School and praised the Principal and the teachers for their devotion. Mrs. Arslanian then shared some of the School’s achievements and announced the School Board’s decision to offer Armenian language instruction in both the Eastern and Western Armenian dialects beginning with the next academic year.

Alidz Agbabian, a gifted storyteller, entertained the guests by telling the folk tale of the legendary Gor who was one of the heroes of ancient Armenian legends.

After a delicious dinner, talented vocalist Anna Boyrazian entertained the guests with her beautiful voice, offering a selection of Armenian and classical songs. Dr. Vahe Nalbandian, Chairman of the School Board, greeted the guests and expressed his appreciation to the Co-Chairs Rita Meneshian and Louisa Janbazian, and members of the Banquet Committee. Dr. Nalbandian then introduced the Honorees, Dr. John and Mrs. Mary Kassabian, and thanked them for their many years of support, friendship and hospitality. Over the years, the Kassabians hosted many Merdinian School fundraising events at their beautiful home in Pasadena. A gift and a certificate of recognition were presented to the Kassabians as a small token of appreciation.

Merdinian School PTO Treasurer Tamar Poladian-Perron presented a check for $20,000 to the School. Likewise, the Women’s Auxiliary Co-Chairs, Ani Hanessian and Louisa Janbazian, presented the School with a check for $20,000 in support of the School’s scholarship program.

The enjoyable evening concluded with a closing prayer by Pastor Harut Khachatryan, Youth Pastor of United Armenian Congregational Church.

Character Matters!

C. & E. Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School kicked off 2017-2018 academic year with the following motto : Character Matters!

In Luke 2:52 we read, “Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man”. (ISV)  Like Jesus the boy, our objective is to have a new generation of boys and girls who understand and practice the principles of the Christian faith, and live a Christ-centered life.

Therefore, each month we highlight one of the selected ten “Golden Words ” such as: Responsibility, respect, honesty, appreciation, integrity, caring, courage, diligence, fairness, and trustworthiness.

To promote the aforementioned character traits , our students participate in various activities including leading  morning chapels,  in-class topic discussions, Bible verse memorizations, Friday homeroom-time sessions as well as school-wide collaborative poster making to reflect on the Golden Word of the month.

The School is looking forward to active student participation in future endeavors in an effort to foster good character traits through service and fundraising projects to assist the needy.

We praise the Lord for this school, and for the supporters of its mission among the Armenian community here in the greater Los Angeles area!
